Joseph Borzelleca, Professor, Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, received his B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from St. Joseph's University (1952), his M.S. in Pharmacology (1956) from the Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. He was Instructor in Pharmacology at the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania (now the Medical College of Pennsylvania) from 1956 - 1959. He joined the faculty of the Medical College of Virginia as Assistant Professor in 1959 and advanced through the ranks to Professor in 1967, his current position.

Dr. Borzelleca has published more than 125 abstracts, more than 150 papers in refereed journals, contributed to 110 publications on the safety of GRAS substances from FASEB/LSRO, publication from the National Academy of Sciences (Committee Reports and the World Health Organization, 15 book chapter, and 1 book.

His research has been primarily in the area of safety evaluation of foods, food chemicals, drugs, cosmetics and other chemicals; specifically, general toxicology, reproductive and developmental toxicology, carcinogenesis. He has also investigated drug movement across membranes (urinary bladder, salivary glands), the mechanisms of toxicity of various chemicals using the intact animal and suspended and cultured hepatocytes, and the effects of various chemicals on in vitro reproductive activity.
